The Doctor’s theme.

I’m a massive Dr. Who fan, and this really took me back. There were more than a few late nights spent watching Tom Baker’s magical scarf trip the light fantastic across my local PBS station’s airwaves. Baker will always be “my” Doctor, and I can’t wait to introduce Scout to hers (probably David Tennant or Matt Smith).

But, in spite of the changes in actors, sets, TARDISes, companions, and showrunners, one thing that has always remained constant is the awesomeness of the theme song. Variations abound across the 50 year span of the show, but that heavy, driving pre-electronica synth bass riff has always been the anchor for me. This youtube video has all the themes used on the show since the 60s, and watching/hearing them all back to back made me appreciate its constancy over the course of the show even more. Check it out!

New Design

Well, time for another site refresh. I’ts still a work in progress, and most of my subpages aren’t styled yet. But, this is the new look– at least for now. It has a bit more art, and some more flair than my previous design. I loved the simplicity of it, but it wasn’t very appealing visually. I will be adding a gallery at the top of the page on the right as well, so be looking for that.

Cheers!

826 Valencia

As a designer/artist, this new branding and logo work for Dave Eggers826 Valencia is staggeringly awesome. For those who don’t know, 826 is Eggers’ free writing and tutoring program in San Francisco that runs out of the McSweeney’s offices. The catch is that the office and tutoring center is also a Pirate Supply Store. The uber-awesome group responsible for this branding is simply called Office. Check out the new logos and the branding for the items at UnderConsideration.

Also take a moment to watch the embedded video on the page of Eggers talking about the development of the project and how it organically grew into a wonderful place for students to develop their writing skills and, more importantly, develop a passion for creativity.

In addition, Eggers has continued this process in other places and they are equally brilliant. Check out the Echo Park Time Travel Mart and The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. at the links that appeared previously in this sentence.

Be Kind Rewind

In spite of Stuff White People Like, I am very excited about pretty much anything that Michel Gondry does. He’s a film geek and an in-camera effects wiz, and I have yet to be disappointed with one of his films. As a result, I am very, very excited about Be Kind Rewind. It looks like a much smaller film than Gondry’s last few efforts, and I think the somewhat sweet, comedic tone will make for a fun experience.

You can check the trailer here.

Tim and Eric’s Awesome Tour – Off Broadway St. Louis MO

I had the dubious honor of heading up to St. Louis and to see Tim and Eric’s Awesome Tour this Saturday. It was awesome (as the name would seem to imply). I had a fantastic time, overall. The venue was small, close quarters and it was pretty easy to see everything. It was a tiny club that accomodated about 300 people, tops. The floor was packed and they were turning away people at the door who were hoping to purchase tickets the day of the show. We preordered well in advance, so no worries there. I had the distinction of sitting behind some relatives of Eric’s that drove in to see the show, which was cool (after the requisite period of being pissed that they spoiled my almost pristine view of the stage). I found myself wondering afterwards if they had any idea what their nephew/cousin was up to these days.

The show was a mixture of Awesome Show style skits and live comedy pieces that were reminiscent of the Adult Swim series, but unique in their own way. Standout live bits were “Father Mulligan’s Class,” which was, in essence, Tim and Eric do the Catholic church molestation scandals, and “Papa Johns Does Email,” during which they passed out Papa John pizza, lauded their fresh ingredients and dips, and detailed their new email service “complete with randomly inserted animated gifs of pizza.” The also did the most hilarious “Uncle Muscles Hour” skits, and seeing Casey and his brother live is something I won’t soon forget. The video segments were equally incredible, with guest stars like John C. Reilly, Patton Oswalt, and others helping out with characters and situations more commonly seen on the show (Beaver Boys, Channel 5 News Break, etc.). I laughed long and hard and clear the whole time, and I can’t really ask for more than that from a travelling comedy show.

After the show Tim and Eric were awesome (ha!) enough to hang around and chat, sign stuff, etc. I don’t usually get autographs (meeting the people is usually more than enough), but Tim and Eric have been such a huge part of my life for the last few years that I felt the need to have them sign my Tom Goes to the Mayor DVD (a perfect 3 disc set). Eric was uber nice and we got a great picture together. I grabbed a pic with Tim as well, but he was getting tired (easy to tell) and seemed a bit less into it. I totally understood. I would be tired too. Maybe I was a jerk or something. I seem to have that luck when I meet people I like, just like when I tosses a ball to Ozzie Smith to sign once and he just let it fly by. Bastard.

In any case, it was a great show. Thanks for coming our way, T & E. Great Job!

Oh. You can check out the pics here.
