Definitive Shapes – The Shape of Water Review

Confidence.  It was the one word that echoed in my mind during the entirety of Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water. The camera moves, the acting, the production design. Every step is the step of an assured, powerful, and truly confident director.  I felt like I was watching Vertigo or Notorious. Lawrence of Arabia. I have no doubt there was turmoil. Arrays of…

The Sound – Short Story

I recently completed a creative writing project with some of my modern novels students built around post-apocalyptic themes and ideas. I decided to work with them and craft one of my own. Warning: some harsh violence at the end.   The sound woke Ilya from a deep, dreamless sleep. It echoed down the concrete passages that led to his room.…

New Story Available!

Hey, everyone! Just a quick note (the first in a while). My most recent short story, “Diana’s Tree” is available on Amazon Kindle and in Paperback as part of the “Rogue’s Gallery” anthology from Kapahua Press. It’s by far one of the…

My Heart has Awakened

It’s finally here, and I can’t believe how excited I am. I had a conversation with my sister, and we both concluded that having any kind of feelings about Star Wars again was awesome, especially given where we’ve been for the last decade or so (and that’s as someone who didn’t even dislike the prequels that much). Random thoughts in…

Getting back into the swing

Man, I’ve really let this thing go. Working with a new theme (and letting go of my really outdated old one). It feels…weird. But, it’s time to get the site back up and going again. I sorta miss it.

The Doctor’s theme.

I’m a massive Dr. Who fan, and this really took me back. There were more than a few late nights spent watching Tom Baker’s magical scarf trip the light fantastic across my local PBS station’s airwaves. Baker will always be “my” Doctor, and I can’t wait to introduce Scout to hers (probably David Tennant or Matt Smith). But, in spite…

Deadly Premonition – Xbox 360

So, in the midst of continuing work on the next issue of Venger, I have stumbled on an interesting little new release. Put together by Ignition Entertainment and Access Games, Deadly Premonition is an incredibly odd duck (gameduck?). Admittedly I am only through Chapter 1 so far, but I am hooked.  Here’s why. As a kid, I clearly remember the…
